We love water plants at home and have several pots of them. One of my favourite is this water lily which I have 2 plants inside, one purple and another white.

In hot afternoons, I will be hiding under this lotus leaves and we have small fishes in all pots to keep mosquitoes larvaes at bay. Dengue fever is no joke as many people die yearly here and if the authorities even find one miserable larva in my pot, I'll be slammed with a huge fine. So, I feed these small red fishes everyday and they are very cheap. I am sure they are glad I bought them as they are sold as food to big fishes.

I have 2 blue pots to cultivate water lettuces, they will be food for my kois..and more fishes inside.

The koi pond is finally ready. Husband and I wanted a so called 'Japanese' inspired pond. I told him, this heavy granite lamp is a must and we love it when it is lighted with candle at night. It sort of completes the theme. A Chinese contractor quoted us 3.5 times more than what we paid for this pond and we got some Indonesians to do it up well for a much smaller amount. I think these Indonesians are probably the sub-con to the Chinese contractors.

With a new filtering system, the pond is always clear and the fishes happy. I must say that I find it difficult to take pictures of these fishes. They recognise my husband and swim leisurely around, but if I am there, they will are always swimming away or hiding somewhere. Unfortunately, we had to lost a few fishes after putting them in their new home. I am not sure it's the water or excitement, some jumped out and committed suicide :(

Same granite material for the water cascade pot.

If you buy an insect repellent spray which contain citronella oil, it will smell exactly like the bush on the bottom right. I put it there so mosquitoes will leave me alone when I am feeding the fishes.

Another view of the pond and part of our garden.

Have a happy week everyone :)
Aduh! Cantik! Love the pond and the lily pots, too! Beautiful koi and those little fish--so useful for keeping down dengue dan malaria. Have a great weekend enjoying your lily pads!

ReplyDeleteA beautiful post, as always!!! I feel so refreshed whenever I visit your blog.
ReplyDeleteThe koi pond is beautiful, and I love all the little fish in your pots! I had no idea that the fish helped keep mosquitos away. Clever and cute at the same time!
You had the citronella plant for a lot time? Years ago, my girl friends and I did some research and bought these "mosquito plants." My sis even smuggled to Sarawak.
ReplyDeleteSadly the plants didn't grow well, and mati-ed. We suspected that the garden centre must have put something in them, so they look great in the garden centre, but will mati when we buy it.
Small fishes is great idea. You are a good eco fighter.
I tried to teach the Mom's the best song to my Afganhistan and Polynesian kids, they only LOL. My son recommends I should teach them a Chinese song.
ReplyDeleteAre your kids bilinqual? My sis's kids, Dad a kelabit, they can talk mandarin.
Hi Ann..and I thought I was the only person smuggling plants from Kuching to KUL. The kids are tri-lingual actually..it's already compulsory bi-lingual at school...plus Chinese with the popo :)
ReplyDeleteThe way you describe everything is so much fun. And, I think your contractors did a super job on the pond. It's lovely.
ReplyDeleteHi M.Kate.. Wow what a fantastic new look blog, it is amazing. YOu have a beautiful garden , with the pond and all your wondeful flowers .

I had to take a new look of your wonderful garden. Maybe you can plant a tulip in a pot inside the house.
ReplyDeleteYour pond is lovely M! I love your little fishies and I'm sorry some jumped out :(

Hi, M.Kate! LOVE the new look here! And love your new pond... it is beautiful. The Japanese lantern is the perfect crowning touch. Your plantings are so lovely... these photos are dazzling! Happy Days, my friend :o) ((HUGS))
ReplyDeleteOh my, it all looks so beautiful..I had to laugh..would you believe I did have that plant that smells like citronella oil? One of my daughters gave it to me..I lost it last year.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great job they did with the fish pond and you have such wonderful fish. You know just watching fish swimming around, can lower your blood pressure? See how I throw in little pieces of news..ha, ha..
I do enjoy seasons, but really do not like the winter time. When children were young, it was fun..not now..it is a drag.
Have a great weekend my dear friend..Oh, your blog page is beautiful..what a great job you did. I don't dare do anything, for fear I will lose it all.
Much love/Rosebud
Your new pond is utterly fabulous M Kate! Love it! I think koi sometimes dislike change so get stressed. We lost Rudolph that way.
ReplyDeleteI knew one of your plants! The citronella one- here I have one similar labelled from a village show as "Attar of Roses Geranium" -you can make cuttings from it easily but it can't stay outside over Winter. I think yours might be Lady Plymouth

Love your little fish too with the water hyacinth.
It's so beautiful Mary Kate. I had t laugh when you said a few of the fishies committed suicide. And I can't believe they slap you with a fine like they do because of mosquitoes. Living on a lake I would be in big trouble. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic post and what wonderful images!

ReplyDeleteThat lemon scented plant on the right is a popular house plant here. I love the photos of your fishes. They're beautiful, plus kill off mosquitoes. I'll remember that if I ever add a water feature to any future property.
